Pennautier near Carcassonne. A beautiful property in the village of Pennautier, but not overlooked. Spacious grounds, a copse, and swimming-pool 11x5ms. A short, easy walk to the village shops, theatre, restaurant. Formerly a monastery, the house has retained its walled garden & views to the Corbieres & Pyrenees. Near Carcassonne & the Canal du Midi. Sleeps 10+cot. 2 double (1 with en suite) & 3 twin bedrooms.
Le Domaine stands on the edge of a rise above the village, from which there are lovely views of the Pyrenees and Corbieres hills. A lane takes you to the shops, church, bar, restaurant and the village theatre. We are told that the house was a monastic foundation, then a dairy. We have renovated it fully over the past few years. The grounds consist of a spacious garden with shrubs and bushes, and a copse of conifers, bamboo etc. In the corner of the copse is situated the swimming pool 11x5ms with extended paddling area. The wide patio is fenced for security. There is a garage for at least two cars. The house itself is on two floors, with the five bedrooms on the first floor. The sunroom runs the length of the house on the south side, and porte-fenetres lead out on to the dining terrace which looks over the garden. From the gazebo in the copse you have a fine view of the Pyrenees (if the children aren't playing 'shops' in it!)

We are told that tourists may fish without a licence, but you should check this at the Mairie in Pennautier. Canal cruises are available from Carcassonne or you can hire your own boat from other places. There is wonderful country in the Cabardes to the north and in the Montagne Noire. The Corbieres hills to the south-east are sparsely populated and well worth exploring.
Golf
The excellent golf course at Carcassonne is open to visitors and we can arrange an introduction. It has lovely views towards the Pyrenees. There is a good restaurant attached to it. There are several golf courses in the surrounding area.
Further Details
The village shops are all within easy walking distance - baker, butcher, bar, pizza carry-out, stationer, post office etc. There are often shows on in the village theatre, and sometimes exhibitions relating to the troubadours whose culture centres on Pennautier. The village restaurant lies near the river Fresquel and is really good value. It sells the excellent Pennautier wine without mark-up. There is another more up-market restaurant La Bergerie at Aragon, a picturesque village a few miles beyond the house. Banks are to be found in Carcassonne itself. The Canal du Midi runs on the far side of the route nationale. You can get half-day cruises from Carcassonne or Trebes. Alternatively you can hire your own boat for the day. The nearest supermarket is the huge Leclerc about 2 miles away. The village church stands high on its hill overlooking Pennautier. There is an excellent golf course at Carcassonne looking towards the Pyrenees. We can arrange an introduction. A good restaurant is attached to the course. While there is a sports hall in Pennautier, other sporting, cultural and recreational facilities are to be found in abundance in Carcassonne. Carcassonne is the largest fortified medieval city in Europe. The old city has wonderful buildings, battlements, turrets and moat, along with interesting and varied shops in its narrow streets. The 'new' town of Carcassonne lies on the other side of the river Aude and has a wealth of shops, museums, galleries, theatres and sporting facilities.
